World Oceans Day

8 june 2026 year

Every year on June 8, the global community celebrates World Oceans Day. This is not just a date, but a global call to action, as the world’s oceans are the true heart of our planet, directly sustaining the life of every one of us.

The idea of marking this day was first proposed by Canada in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. World Oceans Day was officially recognized in 2008 by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly.

The world’s oceans cover approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface. Ocean waters act as the planet’s lungs: they produce a significant portion of oxygen and absorb vast amounts of carbon dioxide, helping regulate the global climate. However, this vast ecosystem is now under serious threat due to global warming, large-scale plastic pollution, and resource depletion.

For V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, environmental protection and addressing climate challenges are among key priorities:

  • Fundamental research: scientists and students of the Education and Research Institute of Ecology, Green Energy and Sustainable Development, the School of Biology, and the School of Geology, Geography, Recreation and Tourism actively study hydrological processes, the impact of climate change on ecosystems, and biodiversity status.
  • Training experts: we prepare a new generation of highly qualified specialists capable of developing innovative solutions for environmental monitoring and addressing global ecological crises.
  • Environmental education: the University consistently promotes the principles of sustainable development, raising environmental awareness not only among students but also in society at large.

Although Ukraine is currently facing severe environmental consequences of the war within its territory, we remain part of the global world. Reducing plastic use, sorting waste, using water resources responsibly, and supporting environmental science are contributions that everyone can make, regardless of location.

By protecting the oceans, we protect our own future. Let’s take care of the planet together!
