University Academic Board

The Academic Board of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University

The Academic Board of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is a collegial governing body of the University. Its competence, composition, and term of office are determined by the Law of Ukraine "On Higher Education" and the University Charter.

The term of office of the Academic Board is five years. Its composition is approved by order of the University President. The decisions of the Academic Board come into force by orders and directives of the University President. The University Academic Board is presided over by the Chairman elected at the meeting by secret ballot from within its members who have an academic degree and/or academic honorary title.

The Academic Board of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is chaired by the University President, Vil Bakirov. The University Academic Board comprises the University President, vice-presidents, deans (heads of education and research institutes), the University Academic Secretary, Director of the Central Scientific Library, Chief Accountant, heads of self-government and elected bodies of the Primary Trade Union Organizations of the University employees, as well as representatives of academics, who are elected from among heads of departments, professors, doctors of philosophy, doctors of sciences; elected representatives of other University full-time employees; elected representatives of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral students; heads of elected bodies of the Primary Trade Union Organizations of Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Doctoral students; heads of student self-government bodies of the University in accordance with the quotas specified by the University Charter. At the same time, the University research and teaching staff must comprise not less than 75% of the total membership, and elected representatives from among students — not less than 10%.

The meetings of the University Academic Board are usually held monthly, on the last Monday, except during holidays. If at least 2/3 of the Board members are present, they are considered valid. Extraordinary meetings may be convened on the initiative of the University Academic Board Chairman or at the request of at least one third of the Board members. Heads of structural units of the institution and other persons directly related to the agenda may be invited.

The Academic Board adopts its decisions by open or secret ballot. A decision is considered as adopted if a simple majority of members present voted for it.

The activities of the Academic Board are implemented through the work of permanent and temporary committees governed by the Law of Ukraine "On Higher Education", the Charter of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, the Regulations of the University Academic Board. The list of permanent committees, their composition, agenda issues are approved by the Academic Board.

The committees prepare draft decisions on relevant issues and monitor their implementation, conduct preliminary analysis and examination of decisions on important issues of the University life. The Academic Board forms temporary committees to consider agenda issues of their meetings. In addition to the Academic Board members, other employees of the institution are involved in the committees’ work.

In particular, Karazin University has committees on the following areas: personnel work, legal principles of activities and regulations, optimization of the University structure, international cooperation, educational and methodological activity, research, budget and finances, social and economic work, awarding.
