University Anthem

Lyrics by V. S. Kalashnyk, music by L. I. Donnyk

You were born in Karazin’s dreams —

Spiritual stronghold of Slobozhanshchyna.

And your glory has flown to distant worlds

From the past centuries to the present day.

Sacred Alma Mater,

Years are passing...

The future belongs only to the spirit.

And student years

Gather us all in youth,

Stir our hearts by «Gaudeamus».

Your strength is from our native fields and groves.

Your starts are from Svobody Square

You give Kharkiv your inspiration

And make a path between nations.

Sacred Alma Mater,

Years are passing...

The future belongs only to the spirit.

And student years

Gather us all in youth,

Stir our hearts by «Gaudeamus».

May the lucky star always shine for us

And lead us to victorious peaks.

Our faithful hearts, our thoughts and labor

We carry to the altar of Ukraine.

Sacred Alma Mater,

Years are passing...

The future belongs only to the spirit.

And student years

Gather us all in youth,

Stir our hearts by “Gaudeamus”.

Spiritual Anthem of Ukraine

“Prayer for Ukraine” is a solemn piece of music written in 1885, also known as “Almighty and Only God, preserve Ukraine for us” or as the spiritual anthem of Ukraine.

The music was composed by Mykola Lysenko, a composer, father of Ukrainian classical music, Karazin University alumnus, and the lyrics were written by Oleksandr Konyskyi.

Prayer for Ukraine (lyrics)

Almighty and Only God,

Preserve Ukraine for us,

With beams of freedom and enlightenment

You shine upon her.

With the light of science and knowledge

Illumine us, Your children,

A pure love of our native land,

Foster in us, God.

We pray, our Only God,

Preserve Ukraine for us,

All Your graces and benevolence

Bestow upon our nation.

Grant us freedom, grant us luck,

Grant us enlightenment and happiness,

Grant, oh God, our people

Many, many years.
