Ivan Franko’s Birthday: The University Commemorates the Occasion

On August 27, we celebrate the birthday of Ivan Yakovych Franko, an honorary professor of Karazin University and an outstanding Ukrainian writer, poet, translator, scholar, publicist, and public figure whose multifaceted legacy holds a special place in the history of Ukrainian culture and science.

His literary and scholarly contributions are remarkably diverse, encompassing literature, linguistics, folklore studies, ethnography, history, economics, philosophy, and socio-political thought. Franko left thousands of literary and scholarly works, translated works by numerous authors of world literature, and contributed to the development of Ukrainian humanities.

For Ukrainian culture, Ivan Franko became not only an outstanding writer but also one of the creators of the modern Ukrainian intellectual space.

In 1906, Ivan Franko was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
