World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

21 may 2026 year

Every year on May 21, the global community celebrates the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development — a holiday established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly and first observed in 2003.

In 2001, UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, which defines cultural diversity as the “common heritage of humanity.” The Declaration affirms every person’s right to cultural identity and emphasizes that respect for diversity is an essential condition for dignity and equal opportunities for all.

Cultural diversity is not a source of division, but a foundation for mutual enrichment. It serves as a driving force for the intellectual, moral, and spiritual development of society, while intercultural dialogue remains an important path toward sustainable peace and understanding among nations.

V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University consistently supports these values. Students from different countries study at the university, international scientific and educational projects are implemented, and the academic environment is built on the principles of openness, mutual respect, and equal rights for every individual — regardless of origin, language, or cultural tradition.

On this day, the university reminds us that cultural diversity is a shared treasure that should be preserved and strengthened through dialogue, education, and human solidarity.
