Independence Day of Ukraine

On 24 August, Ukraine celebrates Independence Day.

Independence is not merely a political status or a historical fact recorded on paper. It is the right to think freely, speak one’s native language, explore the world, learn, and choose one’s own future on one’s own land.

Today, this concept is measured not by slogans, but by concrete actions and human resilience. Independence is the struggle of our soldiers for every metre of Ukrainian land. It is reflected in the dedication of civilians who keep life going in frontline cities and throughout the country. It is embodied in the steadfastness of the academic community, which preserves the nation’s scientific and educational potential, educates new generations, and creates innovations despite all security challenges.

For more than two centuries, Karazin University has been one of the key centres where Ukrainian identity was shaped and the idea of our statehood strengthened. The freedom to conduct research and create something new has always been at the heart of university life. Today, Karazinians continue to fight for and defend this freedom: on the front line with weapons in their hands, in volunteer centres, in research laboratories, and in underground classrooms.

We bow our heads in profound respect for the memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine’s right to be free, and we express our sincere gratitude to all the defenders who make it possible for our flag to fly over Ukrainian land.
