Karazin University became part of the consortium for the study of the genomics of biodiversity of Europe under the program "Horizon Europe"
Representatives of Karazin University, as part of a consortium of research organizations and universities, won a grant under the European Union's largest research and innovation program "Horizon Europe".
Karazintsy implements the research project "Biodiversity Genomics Europe" dedicated to the acquisition of genomic data and methods for description, monitoring and conservation of biodiversity on the continent.
The project aims to continue work on DNA barcoding of biodiversity through large-scale reading of the unique short region of the genome for each of the known species, which should become its genetic identifier. This will significantly help in the inventory of species and the monitoring of changes in ecosystems.
Karazin University is the only Ukrainian institution of higher education that participated in the implementation of the project and represents Ukraine. The consortium includes 33 research organizations and universities from 20 countries in Europe and North America. The coordinator of the project is the "Naturalis" Biodiversity Center (Leiden, the Netherlands).
In Karazinsky, the project will be implemented by the Faculty of Biology and the University's Museum of Nature, the duration of the project is 42 months.
