International Academic Conference Marking the 90th Anniversary of the Birth of Professor Volodymyr Semenovych Kalashnyk

On 22–23 October 2026, the Department of Ukrainian Language of the School of Philology at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University held an International Academic Conference dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of Professor Volodymyr Semenovych Kalashnyk, a linguist, poet, and educator who headed our department for 25 years.

We sincerely thank our co-organisers: the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; H. F. Kvitka-Osnovianenko Educational and Research Institute of Ukrainian Philology at H. S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University; the Department of Ukrainian Language and Literature at the University of Zagreb; the Department of Slavonic Studies at Palacký University Olomouc; and the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at Pace University (USA). Thanks to this joint effort, the conference brought together scholars from around the world.

At the plenary session, the heads of the University, the School, and partner institutions delivered welcoming addresses, as did colleagues who had worked alongside Volodymyr Semenovych for many years. Presentations by leading Ukrainian linguists explored his poetry, aphorisms, phraseology, lexicography and journalistic writing.

The following day, the conference continued in eight sections, covering topics ranging from linguistic poetics and language culture to translation studies, media discourse and literary studies. It was particularly gratifying to see postgraduate students, master's students and undergraduates presenting alongside experienced scholars.

Following the conference, many warm words were shared by the participants, while the most moving words of gratitude came from Volodymyr Semenovych's family. These days were a true tribute to his memory: the conference was filled with warmth and love for the Ukrainian word, just as the Professor himself had been.

A collection of conference abstracts will be published based on the conference proceedings. We also invite researchers to submit articles to the Bulletin of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (Philology Series), an issue of which will be dedicated to Volodymyr Semenovych Kalashnyk.
