Remembering the Price of Freedom: Ukraine's Liberation from Nazi Occupation Day

28 october 2026 year

On 28 October, Ukraine honours the memory of those who fought against Nazi occupation and the millions of people who lost their lives in the Second World War. This date reminds us of courage and sacrifice, cities and villages destroyed, families torn apart, and the long road to recovery.

The Karazin community preserves the memory of the University's students, teachers, and staff who resisted Nazism, saved lives, and worked towards victory and post-war reconstruction. Their stories are part of the history of the University and Ukraine, a legacy we must understand and pass on to future generations.

Today, amid Russia's war against Ukraine, Ukrainians are once again defending their land, freedom, and right to determine their own future. Every day, we see the heavy price of resisting aggression and how much depends on resilience, mutual support, and the willingness to act.

It is our duty to honour the victims of past wars, counter historical distortion, and support those who are defending Ukraine today.

We bow our heads in remembrance of the fallen. We thank the men and women defending our country, thanks to whom we can continue teaching, conducting research, and working towards the future.
