Solemn Opening of the Institute of Social and Economic Geography and Regional Studies named after Kostiantyn Nemets
A solemn opening ceremony of the Institute of Social and Economic Geography and Regional Studies named after Kostiantyn Arkadiyovych Nemets took place at Karazin University.
Kostiantyn Arkadiyovych Nemytsy was an eminent Ukrainian geographer and public figure, a hydrogeologist, a professor at the Institute of Social and Economic Geography and Regional Studies, and the Institute of Hydrogeology at the School of Geology, Geography, Recreation, and Tourism. He served as the Dean of the School of Geology, Geography, Recreation, and Tourism from 1995 to 2010 and was an Honored Professor of Karazin University. Kostiantyn Arkadiyovych passed away on October 21, 2021.
Today, representatives from the School of Geology, Geography, Recreation, and Tourism unveiled an exhibition showcasing his scientific achievements and his journey as a scholar and as a person.
As mentioned by Katerina Kravchenko, an associate professor at the institute, "He worked here for half a century. He inspired the youth and young researchers with his unwavering dedication, enthusiasm, and professionalism. He was our academic father. We are confident that thanks to his powerful work and enormous contribution to the development of social geography and geology, the golden age of geography, which Kostiantyn Arkadiyovych wrote about, will come."
Notably, the event was attended by Anton Pantelimonov, the Vice-Rector for Research and Teaching, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Vyl Bakirov, Dean of the School of Psychology Nadiya Kreidun, and Dean of the School of Philosophy Ivan Karpenko.
Anton Pantelimonov, the Vice-Rector, mentioned, "Of course, the Academic Council could not act differently when the school approached us with a request to name the institute where Kostiantyn Arkadiyovych had worked for his entire life after him. This event is very important within the university because we were all familiar with him. He was an outstanding scientist who did a lot for the school and the institute. Of course, he lives in our memory, in his works... A person lives as long as they are remembered and known."
Vyl Bakirov expressed gratitude to the institute and school for honoring the memory of the prominent university scholar in this way.
Professor Nemets was not only an expert in the field of hydrogeology but also one of the founders of the Kharkiv School of Social Geography, one of the leading researchers in Ukraine. He combined various fields of study, including geology, hydrogeology, and social geography. Colleagues, students, and representatives from other Ukrainian schools, including those from Sumy, Kyiv, and Chernivtsi, also joined in commemorating the scientist.
At the end of the event, Lyudmyla Nemets, the head of the Institute of Social and Economic Geography and Regional Studies and the widow of the professor, presented the monograph "Nature, Man, Society (Socio-geographical Aspects)," which Kostiantyn Arkadiyovych had been working on, and was completed by his students, colleagues, and like-minded individuals. Now, the School of Geology, Geography, Recreation, and Tourism has an institute named after the eminent scientist.
Following the formal part of the event, participants organized a roundtable discussion, sharing memories and stories about Kostiantyn Arkadiyovych.
Karazin University echoes the sentiments expressed about Kostiantyn Arkadiyovych. The university will remember this outstanding individual, and his legacy is forever engraved in the institution's history."
