RECLAIM: Another Step Towards Modern Laboratory-Based Education
As part of the international project RECLAIM — Resource Education Cooperation: Laboratory Advancement, funded by DAAD under the German-Ukrainian University Network (DUHN) programme, representatives of Karazin University took part in a training and laboratory exchange at TU Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF), Germany.
This time, Karazin University was represented by Nadiia Herashchenko, Associate Professor at the Education and Research Institute of Ecology, Green Energy and Sustainable Development, and student Mykhailo Tsarov.

The programme took place from 28 September to 2 October 2026 at the Institute of Thermal-, Environmental- and Resources’ Process Engineering (ITUN) at TUBAF.
Participants took part in train-the-trainer activities, laboratory sessions and professional exchanges with their German colleagues. Particular attention was paid to modern approaches to organising laboratory-based learning, conducting experiments in thermal, environmental and resource-efficient processes, and developing digital learning materials.

An important part of the programme involved students working with video materials for practical laboratory sessions already developed within RECLAIM. This approach makes it possible not only to demonstrate experiments but also to test digital laboratory materials from the student’s perspective and improve them for future use in teaching and learning.
Another key area of work was the discussion of research cooperation and potential joint research projects involving TUBAF, Karazin University and other RECLAIM partners.

For us, RECLAIM is much more than academic mobility. The project provides an opportunity to bring modern European approaches to laboratory-based learning to Ukrainian universities, develop new teaching methods, create digital and hybrid laboratory courses, and gradually modernise our educational infrastructure.
It is particularly valuable that this work involves not only teaching staff and researchers but also our students, who can directly contribute to the quality and usability of future learning materials.
We sincerely thank our colleagues at TU Bergakademie Freiberg for their hospitality, professional exchange and openness to collaboration!
More laboratory materials and joint educational solutions lie ahead, and we hope that new research projects will follow.
RECLAIM — building modern laboratory education together!
