We, as humans, are an integral part of the environment, and therefore, we bear a direct responsibility for its preservation. Every representative of the fauna is unique in nature, but some of them require exceptional attention and care from humanity. Bats, in particular, belong to this special group.

Bats, or Chiroptera, are remarkable creatures, constituting one of the most numerous groups of mammals in terms of species. They are the only mammals capable of sustained active flight among other mammals.

These animals are true helpers to humans. Bats, for instance, contribute to the control of harmful insects, assist in pollinating plants, and aid in the dispersal of seeds and fruits, helping to save costs in agriculture spent on purchasing chemical fertilizers.

In Ukraine, bats are on the verge of extinction and are included in the Red Book, making it crucial to be conscious about their protection.

In the autumn, bats migrate to warmer places in search of winter shelter, covering thousands of kilometers. Very often, bats find refuge in the walls of Karazin University (northern and main buildings) because the architecture resembles natural rocks for these creatures. In their quest for temporary shelter to rest and sleep, they may enter ventilation systems, open windows, and gaps that should not be left unattended for long.

As, especially, in the space between window frames (referring to old-type frames), bats cannot rescue themselves, and they perish from overheating and dehydration.

If you have noticed a bat caught in such a trap, we recommend contacting the Ukrainian Bat Rehabilitation Center (phone: +380 (66) 305-98-95). Biologists from the center will provide advice on how to provide first aid to the animals, and if necessary, they can come and take them for rehabilitation.
