On 11 June 2026, the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Liliia Hrynevych, delivered a presentation titled “Organizing Secondary Education During Wartime: Ukraine’s Experience and Lessons Learned”.

The presentation took place within the framework of an international discussion on the resilience of education systems, the support of school education in crisis conditions, and the continuity of learning during armed conflicts. Liliia Hrynevych shared Ukraine’s experience with representatives of the international education and security community, including participants of the Finnish National Defence Courses.

The presentation outlined the trajectory of Ukrainian education from the first weeks of the full-scale war to the stages of stabilization and transformation. Ukraine demonstrated how an education system can adapt to extraordinary challenges: from the rapid transition to distance learning and support for students and teachers to the creation of safe educational environments.

Particular attention was paid to the experience of frontline communities, the development of blended learning, the use of digital educational tools, and the creation of conditions that allow learning to continue even under difficult security circumstances. In particular, Ukraine’s experience in developing underground schools in Kharkiv and other formats of safe learning environments has become an example of innovative solutions in crises.

Ukraine’s experience is currently being studied in various countries, as the issue of educational resilience in the face of new challenges is becoming increasingly important worldwide. Ukrainian solutions demonstrate that even during wartime, it is possible to preserve children’s right to education, support teachers, and ensure the continued development of the education system.

International attention to Ukraine’s experience shows that its approaches extend beyond the national context. Other countries are studying Ukraine’s practices in crisis management in education, emergency preparedness, digital transformation, and support for participants in the educational process.

Ukraine continues to share its lessons while also receiving important support from international partners to strengthen and rebuild its education system.
