Student Roman Dehtiarov — Winner of the European Chess Championship

A second-year student of the Education and Research Institute “Karazin Institute of International Relations and Travel Business” Roman Dehtiarov won the European Chess Championship, which concluded on April 19, 2026, in the city of Katowice (Poland).

More than 500 chess players from 43 countries competed in the tournament.

Having only the 126th starting ranking among 500 participants, Roman scored 9 out of 11 possible points and became the first player in the history of the tournament to win without holding the grandmaster title. 

Thanks to this success, Roman qualified for the FIDE World Cup, which will take place in 2027. 

The following Ukrainians also qualified for the competition: a graduate of the School of Foreign Languages Anton Korobov, and a legend of Ukrainian chess Vasyl Ivanchuk.
