The P. T. Tronko Center for Area Studies of Karazin University has prepared an online project on the occasion of Lesia Ukrainka’s birthday.

The year 2021 marks the 150th birth anniversary of the outstanding Ukrainian poetess Lesia Ukrainka (1871–1913). This anniversary is celebrated internationally: it is included in the list of memorable dates of UNESCO.

The poetess made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian literature. The prominent Ukrainian poet and public figure, Honorary Doctor of Kharkiv University, Ivan Franko highly appreciated her talent, noting: «Since the time of Shevchenko’s „Bury me, then rise and break the shackles“, Ukraine has not heard such a strong, passionate and poetic word as from the lips of this weak, sick girl.»

Lesia Ukrainka had many relatives and friends among Kharkiv University alumni and faculty. In particular, in 1901-1903, her older brother, Mykhailo Kosach, worked at the School of Physics and Mathematics of our University. After the poetess’s death, many artists associated with Karazin University dedicated musical, artistic and literary works to her. Some of them are presented in this online project.

The project materials are available at the link.
