International Day for Monuments and Sites: Karazin University Community Marks the Occasion

18 april 2026 year

On April 18, the world celebrates the International Day for Monuments and Sites, established on the initiative of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and approved by the General Assembly of UNESCO. In Ukraine, the Day of Historical and Cultural Heritage is also observed on this day.

The purpose of this occasion is to encourage humanity to develop a deeper awareness of how significant cultural heritage is for our lives, identity, and unity. This day aims to draw attention to its diversity and, at the same time, its fragility, as well as to the efforts required for its careful protection and preservation.

The issue of safeguarding historical and cultural heritage is especially relevant for our country today. According to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, as of early April 2026, 1,723 cultural heritage sites and 2,524 cultural infrastructure facilities have been damaged due to Russian military aggression.

Today, the knowledge and skills necessary for studying and protecting historical and cultural heritage sites can be acquired at the School of History of Karazin University. The faculty includes a specialized Department of Historiography, Monument Studies, and Archaeology. Many graduates of the faculty and department work in museums, archives, libraries, and research institutions, preserving artifacts of past eras for future generations.

We have collected their quotes about their career paths, the role of the School of History in shaping these paths, and their views on the current state of monument protection in Ukraine in cards for convenient viewing.

We are proud of the graduates of the School of History of Karazin University who work to preserve historical memory for future generations and recognize the value of their daily contribution to our shared future.
