Karazin Community Commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Ivan Tarapov

Today, the university community commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Tarapov, an outstanding Ukrainian scientist, educator, professor, and long-serving Rector of Karazin University (1975–1993).

Ivan Tarapov’s life serves as an example of tireless dedication to science, education, and the development of the Ukrainian academic tradition. Through his innovative research, devoted teaching, and wise leadership, he made a significant contribution to the education of several generations of scholars and professionals.

A special place in Ivan Tarapov’s biography is occupied by his work as Rector of Karazin University. For nearly two decades, he defined the university’s strategic directions, promoted the strengthening of its research potential, expanded its material and technical resources, and enhanced its reputation both in Ukraine and internationally. Under his leadership, the university preserved and enriched its finest academic traditions, becoming one of the country’s leading centers of education and research.

The scholar’s extensive academic legacy includes more than 200 scientific publications. Under his supervision, 14 Candidate of Sciences dissertations and 1 Doctor of Sciences dissertation were successfully defended. The textbook “Vector Analysis and the Fundamentals of Tensor Calculus”, co-authored with Oleksandr Borysenko, went through six editions and remains a classic text in university mathematics.

Tarapov also devoted considerable attention to issues of higher education through his publicistic works. His monograph “Intellectual Labor, Science, and Education. The Crisis in Ukraine” (1994) became one of the first systematic analyses of the educational challenges faced by independent Ukraine. From 1999 to 2002, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal “UNIVERSITATIS”, which provided a platform for intellectual discussions and the examination of pressing issues in university education.

Ivan Tarapov left behind not only fundamental scientific works but also a powerful intellectual and managerial legacy that continues to inspire students, faculty members, and researchers today. On the occasion of his centennial anniversary, we gratefully remember his life journey, professional achievements, and defining role in the development of Karazin University, Ukrainian science, and higher education. Ivan Tarapov remains one of the most distinguished representatives of the Karazin academic community.
