Day of Mourning and Remembrance of the Victims of War in Ukraine: Karazin University Remembers

On 22 June, Ukraine observes the Day of Mourning and Remembrance of the Victims of War, honoring the memory of the millions of people whose lives were lost or forever changed by the wars that have scarred Ukrainian soil.

It was on 22 June 1941 that Ukraine found itself at the epicenter of one of the darkest chapters in its history. The Second World War brought widespread devastation, occupation, mass killings, deportations, and irreparable human losses. Its consequences touched every Ukrainian family and left an enduring mark on the nation's collective memory.

For Karazin University, this date also carries profound significance. Faculty members, students, and alumni took part in the struggle against Nazism, worked on the home front, cared for the wounded, and sustained scientific and educational activities even under the most difficult wartime conditions. Despite evacuation and the hardships of war, the University remained committed to fulfilling its academic mission.

Today, the memory of those events carries renewed meaning. For more than a decade, Ukraine has been resisting Russian aggression, and since 2022 has endured a full-scale invasion that continues to claim lives every day. Once again, the aggressor is destroying cities, killing civilians and service members, and attempting to erase Ukraine's statehood, culture, and educational heritage.

The Karazin University community understands the true cost of this struggle. On the Day of Mourning and Remembrance of the Victims of War, we honor the memory of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for Ukraine's freedom and independence.
