Day of Defenders of Ukraine: Honouring Those Who Defend Our Country
On 1 October, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Defenders of Ukraine, a day of honouring all those who stand in defence of our country, its freedom, independence and the right of Ukrainians to live in their own state.
This date connects the present with Ukraine’s historical traditions. 1 October also marks Ukrainian Cossacks Day and the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, a celebration long revered by Ukrainian Cossacks that became one of the symbols of their spiritual and military life.
The Cossacks are an important part of Ukraine’s historical memory. The Zaporozhian Cossacks defended Ukrainian lands, fought for freedom, and established a tradition of military brotherhood, mutual assistance, and responsibility for their community. Today, these values continue to be embodied by Ukrainian service personnel — men and women defending Ukraine in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
This day holds special significance for Karazin University. Members of the Karazin community include service personnel and veterans, both men and women. Their contribution is part of the University’s history and the contemporary history of our country.
The University community also remembers Karazin community members who gave their lives defending Ukraine. Their names will forever remain part of the University’s collective memory.
On this day, we thank all the defenders of Ukraine for their courage, endurance and service. We bow our heads in remembrance of those who have fallen.
We honour those who defend Ukraine. We remember those who gave their lives for it. We work for its future.
Happy Day of Defenders of Ukraine!
Happy Ukrainian Cossacks Day!
Blessed Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos!
