Constitution Day of Ukraine: Greetings from Karazin University

June 28 is one of the most significant dates in Ukraine’s history. Thirty years ago, on the night of June 28, 1996, after nearly twenty-four hours of continuous work, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Fundamental Law of the state – the Constitution of Ukraine. This event was preceded by years of hard work, discussions, and the search for consensus. The adoption of the Constitution was an important step in building an independent state and in enshrining its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democratic system.

At the same time, the traditions of Ukrainian constitutionalism have much deeper roots. As early as 1710, Hetman Pylyp Orlyk drafted a document that defined the principles of governance, limited governmental powers, and outlined the rights of the Cossack community. Today, this document is regarded as one of the most remarkable monuments of Ukrainian political and legal thought.

Three decades have passed since the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine, yet its significance remains unchanged. It serves as the foundation of the functioning of the state, the guarantor of citizens’ rights and freedoms, and the cornerstone of the democratic development of Ukrainian society.
