All-Ukrainian Day of Local History

28 may 2026 year

On May 28, our country celebrates the All-Ukrainian Day of Local History. This holiday brings together those who research and promote local history, preserve the natural treasures of their native land, and reveal the uniqueness of the material and spiritual cultural heritage of their region.

For Kharkiv, this day is especially significant, as our city is the cradle of Ukrainian local history studies. It was here, on May 28, 1925, that the First All-Ukrainian Conference on Local History began, laying the foundation for the organizational formation of the local history movement. These events paved the way for the establishment of the modern National Union of Local Historians of Ukraine.

At all times, scholars of Karazin University have devoted considerable attention to the multifaceted study of the Kharkiv region. It is no coincidence that in 2008 the first Center for Scientific Local History Studies in Ukraine was established at Karazin University. Today, the Center bears the name of Petro Tronko — Honorary Doctor and the first Chairman of the University Supervisory Board, Hero of Ukraine, and академician.

Today, local history studies have become established as a separate academic discipline and have transformed into a powerful public movement.

We congratulate everyone who loves their native land and contributes to the study of its unique identity on this special occasion!
