Lecture by Professor of Shakespeare Studies, Director of the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon Michael Dobson: we invite you to join
On April 26, Michael Dobson, Director of the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon and Professor of Shakespeare Studies, will give a guest lecture for Karazin residents.
Professor Dobson’s academic mission is self-described: "My career as a teacher and author of Shakespeare’s plays and poems has been devoted not only to the study of these great works in their sixteenth- and seventeenth-century context, but also to the exploration of how they have stimulated and enabled the creativity of others, both individual and collective, at different times, whether as actors (both professional and amateur), scholars, directors, philosophers, composers, critics, sculptors, poets or novelists. As a consequence, I enjoy working as a consultant to theatre directors and actors, as well as publishing academic essays and books.
Although my main focus is on the interpretation of Shakespeare in the theatre in the centuries since his death, and the history of our enduring love affair with Elizabeth and Elizabethans in general, I have an enthusiastic and informed interest in most things done in Shakespeare’s name in various media around the world".
Professor Michael Dobson has been Director of the Shakespeare Institute since 2011. He has taught at universities including Oxford, Harvard, the University of London and the University of Illinois at Chicago, and has lectured on Shakespeare in over thirty countries. He is co-director of the Shakespeare Centre in Nanjing, China, and holds honorary degrees from Lund University in Sweden and the University of Craiova in Romania, as well as being the recipient of the Craiova Shakespeare Festival’s International Shakespeare Prize.
His publications include The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare and Shakespeare: A Guide for the Spectator and the Reader (both co-authored with Stanley Wells), The Making of a National Poet (1992), Performing Shakespeare’s Tragedies Today (2006), Shakespeare and the Amateur Theatre (2011) and The English Elizabeth (2002), which he co-authored with his wife and world authority on literary tourism, Professor Nicola Watson. Michael also acts as a consultant to theatre directors and actors and is an honorary board member of the RSC and a trustee of the Flute Theatre.
During the year of war, Professor Dobson provided shelter in his home to many Ukrainian scientists. He will come to visit the courageous Karazin students to express his admiration and support for them.
The lecture is a part of the lecture series of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University: "Lecture to Victory: World Speakers in Support of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University" and will be the tenth under this initiative.
