Anniversary of the Renowned Physicist, Honored Professor of the University, and First Vice-Rector for Research Work of Karazin University, Illia Zalubovskyi: The University Remembers
June 15 marks the 95th anniversary of the birth of the distinguished Ukrainian scientist in the field of experimental nuclear physics, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, honored figure in science and technology of Ukraine, honored professor of Karazin University, twice laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in science and technology, and the first Vice-Rector for research work at Karazin University, Illia Ivanovych Zalubovskyi.
For over 60 years, his life was inextricably linked with Karazin University, and for 46 years with the science at university.
At Karazin university, Illia Ivanovych progressed from a student in the Nuclear department of the School of Physics and Mathematics to the first Vice-Rector for Research work.
He led a group of scientists engaged in scientific work and training of highly qualified specialists at the Atomic Center of the Arab Republic of Egypt. In 1966, he defended his doctoral dissertation, and since 1967, he was a professor. In 1965, he became the Head of the Department of Experimental Nuclear Physics, and since 1967, the Vice-Rector for research work at the university.
Under Illia Ivanovych's leadership, a powerful experimental base was created at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University to solve fundamental problems of nuclear physics, radiation physics of solids, radiation materials science, biophysics and medical physics, radiation tests and technologies, as well as substance microanalysis. It was at his initiative that experimental methods for studying the interaction of cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere and magnetosphere began to develop intensively.
At the beginning of these studies, under the leadership of Illia Ivanovych, a new physical phenomenon was discovered — the effect of radio emission from extensive air showers of cosmic rays, and later, the mechanism of its occurrence was thoroughly studied.
Illia Zalubovskyi made significant efforts to improve the organization of scientific research. Today, the structural units created on his initiative and headed by the highly qualified specialists he trained continue the previously started research in cooperation with institutions of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Space Agency of Ukraine, and leading nuclear physics research centers in other countries.
He played a significant role in the organization and development of the "School of Physics and Technology" education and research institute at the university, where he was the first dean.
The university remembers Illia Ivanovych's immense contribution to its development. His bright memory will forever remain in our hearts!
