The General Assembly of the United Nations declared March 22nd as World Water Day.
This day aims to raise awareness about the importance of water for sustaining life on Earth, as well as how rational water resource management contributes to economic development and social well-being.
Many representatives of Karazin University have been involved in the study of water resources in our region over the years, advocating for their conservation and careful use. The university's founder, Vasyl Karazin, emphasized the importance of preserving clean and abundant rivers, which are primarily influenced by forest preservation. Today, the Schools of Geology, Geography, Recreation and Tourism, as well as the Education and Research Institute of Ecology at Karazin University, are actively engaged in addressing the challenges of water resource conservation and rational use.
The vital resource that sustains life on Earth is water. It requires our special attention and careful management, especially in the face of environmental challenges. This year's topic for World Water Day is "Using Water for Peace." Despite this, Ukraine faces daily severe environmental challenges due to the war. Pollution of water sources, destroyed infrastructure, and disrupted water resource management pose serious threats to ecological stability.
The destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant became the largest act of terrorism since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Over 700,000 people were left without access to water, and the consequences of this catastrophe will be felt for many years. On the night of March 22nd, World Water Day, Russia launched a massive attack on critical infrastructure in Ukraine, including striking the Dnipro Hydroelectric Power Plant with 8 missiles. The facility is currently in critical condition, with soil contamination and oil spills into the Dnipro River recorded as a result of the shelling.
Therefore, we must make every effort to achieve victory over the enemy and remember the principles of rational use of natural resources to maximize the preservation of our environment!
