Kharkiv Marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Two Representatives of Karazin University Among the Awardees
On 11 February, a ceremonial event dedicated to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated annually at the initiative of the United Nations, took place in Kharkiv. The event served as a platform for supporting and promoting the role of women in science and demonstrated that, even in times of challenge, Kharkiv remains a city of education, research, and bold innovation.
The Mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, congratulated the participants and presented Certificates of Appreciation of the Mayor to 48 women scientists. In his speech, he emphasised that women in science are a driving force behind the city’s development and serve as role models for a new generation of researchers, engineers, and IT professionals.
Among the awardees were two representatives of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, whose work constitutes a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian and European science.

Olha Maksakova, PhD in Physical and Mathematical Sciences and Senior Researcher at the Department of Reactor Materials Science and Physical Technologies, was recognised for her outstanding achievements in the development and study of nanostructured and multilayer protective coatings for industrial, aviation, and high-tech applications. Her research focuses on improving wear resistance, thermal stability, and durability of engineering products. She is the author of more than 50 publications in international journals, a co-author of monographs and patents, a recipient of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Prize for Young Scientists (2024), and a finalist of the Ukrainian L’Oréal – UNESCO For Women in Science Award.

Liudmyla Posokhova, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Professor of the Department of History of Ukraine, was honoured for her many years of scientific and teaching activity, her significant contribution to the development of historical scholarship, and the training of highly qualified specialists. She is the author of over 190 academic works, including 11 monographs, the academic guarantor of a Master’s degree programme, a participant in international research projects, and an editor of professional scholarly publications.

The event also featured an interactive STEM exhibition, where visitors had the opportunity to explore experimental demonstrations, scientific developments, and educational opportunities offered by Kharkiv’s higher education institutions. Special attention was given to career guidance for schoolchildren and teenagers, encouraging young people to choose STEM careers and fostering a culture of equal opportunities in science.
