On 2–3 December 2025, Manchester (United Kingdom) hosted a session of the High Scientific Council of the European Nuclear Society (ENS), the central part of which was the award ceremony for the best PhD works in the nuclear field in 2025 (ENS High Scientific Council PhD Award 2025).

Ukraine and the Ukrainian Nuclear Society were represented at the event by Pylyp Kuznietsov, Director of the Education and Research Institute “School of Physics and Technology.”

During the first part of the session, four finalists of the PhD Award presented the results of their dissertation research, including:

  • full-spectrum modelling of airborne gamma spectrometry using the Monte Carlo method;

  • real-time detection of anomalies during welding implantation based on experimental analysis and machine learning;

  • development of an experimental device to study changes in neutron flux density caused by the insertion of a control rod into the reactor core.

The winner of the award was Dr. Đorđe Petrović (KU Leuven, Belgium), who presented research on the physics of severe core-disruptive accidents in fast reactors with heavy liquid metal coolant.

The second part of the session was dedicated to key strategic issues: approval of the Council’s operational procedures, review of progress on previous decisions, and discussions on important documents relating to nuclear medicine and the lifetime extension of nuclear power plants.
