Screening of the Documentary Project “Veterans’ Journey Home”
On April 7, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University hosted a screening of the documentary project “Veterans’ Journey Home,” dedicated to the psychological recovery of veterans after returning from war.
The event brought together students, faculty members, psychologists, and everyone working in or interested in veteran support. The focus was on the complex process of returning to civilian life, which is often accompanied by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and a sense of disconnection from society.
As part of the event, participants watched two films: “The Solution,” which explores non-medical approaches to veteran rehabilitation, and the documentary “Ben’s Story,” a deeply personal narrative about struggle, loss, and the path to recovery.
Following the screening, a discussion took place with director Frederick Marx, an Academy Award and Emmy Award nominee, who has spent over 45 years addressing social change through filmmaking. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, reflect on what they had seen, and share their perspectives on the role of society in supporting veterans.
Special attention during the discussion was given to the importance of community, empathy, and alternative approaches to psychological rehabilitation. The need to raise public awareness of the challenges faced by veterans after returning from the front was also emphasized.
The event was supported by the university community and became an important step toward fostering a more empathetic and responsible attitude to the veteran experience in Ukrainian society.
