On May 22, the world celebrates International Day for Biological Diversity to raise awareness of issues related to the conservation of the biological world. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed this holiday back in 2000. However, thousands of living organisms still disappear from Earth every year.
The conservation of Earth's biodiversity is an extremely relevant topic, as it impacts climate stability, food production, and the quality of human life.
The Ukrainian ecosystem encompasses about 35% of Europe's biodiversity. Yet today, Ukraine is experiencing a true ecocide due to the full-scale invasion by russia. The russians are destroying not only our infrastructure and buildings but also the environment of our country.
Thousands of dead dolphins have been found in the Black Sea. Daily shelling causes forest fires. Currently, there is a serious threat of waste leakage. The destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, provocations at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, fires at thermal power plants, soil and water pollution, and cruelty towards animals are the consequences of the criminal actions of the aggressor country.
Karazin University calls on everyone to preserve the biodiversity of our country, take care of the environment, and make joint efforts to restore our country's ecosystem after the Russian invasion!
