Karazin Impresses: An Asteroid Named After Vasyl Karazin

20 january 2025 year

Can you imagine that the name of our university's founder is known far beyond not only Ukraine but the entire planet? After all, an asteroid (6547) Vasilkarazin is named in honor of Vasyl Karazin.

This asteroid was discovered on September 2, 1987, at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. Currently, little is known about it. It is located in a slightly inclined orbit (4.9 degrees) but follows an elongated trajectory (eccentricity e=0.25). Its perihelion distance is 1.971 astronomical units, and its aphelion distance is 3.166 astronomical units. It does not approach Earth closer than 0.9 astronomical units.

We are proud that Vasyl Nazarovych's name inspired astronomers to name a celestial object in his honor.
