Karazin University Took Part in the All-Ukrainian Scientific Conference "Ukrainian Heart of Odessa: Mykhailo Komarov (Komar) – Public Figure, Enlightener, Bibliographer
On January 23, 2024, the 180th anniversary of the birth of Mykhailo Fedorovych Komarov (1844–1913) was commemorated. He was a public figure, bibliographer, folklorist, lexicographer, publisher, and a prominent literary and theatrical figure.
To mark the anniversary, a nationwide scientific conference titled "Ukrainian Heart of Odessa: Mykhailo Komarov (Komar) – Public Figure, Enlightener, Bibliographer" was held at the Odessa Regional Universal Scientific Library named after M.S. Hrushevsky. Representatives from Odessa, Kyiv, Lviv, as well as various towns and villages in the Volyn, Dnipropetrovsk, and Cherkasy regions participated in the conference.
Kharkiv was represented by Olga Vovk, the deputy director of the Center for Ukrainian Studies and Local Studies named after Academician P.T. Tronko at Karazin University, who delivered a presentation titled "Mykhailo Komarov and His Era in the History of Karazin University."
In 1867, Mykhailo Komarov graduated from the Law School of Karazin University, after which he practiced law for many years. However, he gained fame through his active cultural and educational work.
From 1887 onwards, Mykhailo Komarov lived in Odessa, where he actively participated in the activities of the Odessa "Hromada" and, in the early 20th century, became one of the organizers and leaders of the Odessa "Prosvita." He is well-known as one of the founders of Ukrainian bibliography, the first compiler of the bibliography of works by Taras Shevchenko, and works about him.
