Karazin University Celebrates the 216th Anniversary of its Opening
January 29, 1805 is a landmark date in the history of Karazin University. On this day 216 years ago, solemn events were held on the occasion of its opening.
The names of world-famous researchers, scholars and educators such as Petro Hulak-Artemovskyi, Oleksandr Lyapunov, Mykola Kostomarov, Mykola Barabashov, Mykola Beketov, Dmytro Bahalii, and many others are associated with Karazin University. Kharkiv University is the only university in Ukraine where three Nobel Prize winners studied and worked: biologist Ilya Mechnikov, economist Semen Kuznets, and physicist Lev Landau. Among the University Doctors Honoris Causa was the first President of Ukraine Mykhailo Hrushevskyi.
The University published the first Ukrainian newspapers and journals, established the first scientific societies.
Over 130,000 people have graduated from the University during its existence. The names of the University alumni are immortalized in geographical names, names of space objects, plants and minerals, laws and formulae. Many streets of the city are named after professors, researchers, and alumni of the University.
The University has long-standing traditions of international cooperation, is a member of educational and professional associations, holds high positions in national and international rankings, which demonstrates that the world scientific community recognizes the important role of the University in training highly qualified specialists in various fields.
