Karazin University Welcomes Delegation of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany

On 29 July 2026, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University welcomed a delegation from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, including Deputy Head of Mission Kathrin Buchholz and Political Counsellor Stefan Raffainer. The primary purpose of the visit was to strengthen academic and research cooperation, discuss the University's institutional development, and explore continued support for the University during the ongoing war.

During a working meeting with the University leadership—Acting Rector Tetyana Kaganovska, Vice Rectors Anatolii Babichev and Daria Bortnykova — the participants discussed the implementation of joint educational, research, and cultural projects, as well as key areas of support for the University. Despite the challenges posed by the full-scale war and the extensive damage sustained by the institution, Karazin University continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience. It maintains its leading position in the QS World University Rankings, ensures the continuity of the educational process, conducts cutting-edge research in nuclear medicine and tissue engineering, and continues to fulfil its important social and cultural mission. University representatives expressed their sincere gratitude to Germany for its significant assistance, particularly for the implementation of the project to replace 2,500 windows damaged during the missile attack on 2 January 2024, as well as for supporting the development of joint educational hubs in Munich and the introduction of dual-degree programmes.

The programme continued with an open meeting between the German delegation and Karazin students. During the discussion, Ms Buchholz emphasised that support for Ukraine is increasingly becoming a two-way exchange of knowledge and experience. According to her, Ukraine's expertise in the energy sector, the development of autonomous energy systems, and civil defence has become unique and highly valuable for Germany.

A particularly memorable and emotional part of the visit was the delegation's tour of the Yermilov Centre for Contemporary Art. The guests viewed the exhibition Fragment of a Polyphonic Landscape, organised with the support of the Goethe-Institut Ukraine. The exhibition addresses the war in Donbas and explores Russia's ongoing aggression through the lens of contemporary art. At the conclusion of the visit, the parties outlined the next steps in their partnership and exchanged commemorative gifts.
