Day of Remembrance for the Heroes of Kruty: The University Pays Tribute

29 january 2025 year

On January 29, 1918, at the Kruty railway station, just 130 kilometers from Kyiv, an event took place that is forever engraved in the consciousness of Ukrainians as a symbol of sacrifice and resilience. A few hundred brave young men made their choice — they stood against a numerically superior Bolshevik army to defend the young Ukrainian People's Republic. They were the sons of peasants, workers, and priests; soldiers, students, and high school pupils. Instead of attending lectures and reading books, they took up arms, understanding that their fight was not just for land but for the right of their nation to be free.

Today, more than a century later, Ukraine is once again defending its independence against Russian aggression. Just like the defenders of Kruty, our contemporaries—young men and women who were recently building careers, studying at universities, or just dreaming about their future — are now going to the front lines to protect freedom. Among them are many students of Karazin University, proving once again that the spirit of resistance and love for their homeland is not just words but a profound part of the Ukrainian soul.

Just as in 1918, the enemy seeks to destroy our identity, but every heroic act is a reminder that we are stronger when we stand united. The feat of the Heroes of Kruty has become a symbol of resilience that continues to inspire new generations to fight for a free, independent Ukraine.

Eternal glory to the Heroes of Kruty and to all who defend Ukraine today.
