Day of Honoring the Liquidators of the Chernobyl Accident
On December 14, Ukrainians honor the heroic feat of the liquidators of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.
This memorable date was established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine on November 10, 2006. It was on December 14 that the construction of the protective “sarcophagus” covering the destroyed fourth reactor was finished. The destroyed reactor ceased to be a source of radioactive contamination of the environment.
The Chernobyl accident was the largest man-made disaster in the history of nuclear energy.
The heroism of the liquidators saved millions of people. At the cost of their own lives and health, under high doses of radiation, they managed to localize the accident and save the world from radiation pollution.
We honor the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident and remember those who gave their lives saving the world from a terrible man-made disaster.
