Philologist's Day
Every year on May 25th, Ukraine celebrates Philologist's Day.
Philologists are those who bring us the magic of words and open the doors to various worlds created by language. They preserve the history and culture of nations because, as Lina Kostenko writes, "nations do not die from heart attacks, they lose their language first." Their work is not only about preserving linguistic heritage but also about opening new horizons for future generations.
This day is special for those who have dedicated their lives to the study, preservation, and improvement of our language. Linguists, literary scholars, language and literature teachers, librarians, translators — all those who have linked their education, life, and professional activities with philology. They nurture language traditions and interest in literature in its various forms.
"The language of people is its spirit, and the spirit of people is its language, and it is difficult to imagine something more identical," said Wilhelm von Humboldt. Thanks to philologists, we have the opportunity to better understand the cultural treasures preserved in language and draw inspiration from its inexhaustible sources.
The School of Philology of Karazin University provides broad humanitarian education, enriches its graduates with knowledge of the deepest depths of world languages and literatures, fosters love and respect for native sources. Experienced teachers teach to find beauty in every phrase and pass it on as a precious treasure.
Today, we express our gratitude to those who reveal to us the wealth of language, help us better understand ourselves and the world around us.
Happy Philologist's Day! May your knowledge continue to illuminate our path, and may your words always find a response in the hearts of people.
