Research Project "Gender Education for Foreign Students" (with NGO "La Strada-Ukraine" in cooperation with V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, supervised by the Government Commissioner for Gender Policy), UNESCO [ 01/02/2023 – Current ]

The inclusion of the principle of gender equality in the system of higher education of Ukraine is an urgent task, as the obvious problems of gender discrimination include, in particular, the problems of gender aspects of interaction between university teachers and foreign students. The project will be implemented by the NGO "La Strada-Ukraine" in cooperation with Karazin University, supervised by the Government Commissioner for Gender Policy, aiming to introduce gender approaches to the training of foreign students studying in Ukraine.

The main direction of the project is the implementation of elements of the modern European gender paradigm in the education of students of African origin studying in Ukrainian higher education institutions, starting with the Karazin University. This project began even before the full-scale invasion, when the number of foreign students at the university was much larger. However, the temporary reduction in their number did not change our plans. The goal of the project: to spread knowledge among students and teachers about the importance of gender equality, in particular in the field of education, for further implementation in practice. We see the need to draw the attention of foreign students to the problem of gender equality and to raise the awareness of the academic community and students about the existing international standards in this area. Project roadmap: First, conducting a sociological study on the presence of gender-tolerant competencies among foreign students and teachers who work with them. This stage has already been implemented. Next - analysis, development and approval of lectures for students and trainings for teachers aimed at developing these competencies. As a result, on the basis of research data, as well as the experience of lectures and master classes, the creation of educational and methodological materials aimed at the formation of gender-tolerant competencies in foreign students and teachers, first of our university, and then of other higher education institutions of Ukraine. And, also, the creation of a thematic online course.

The project is carried out jointly with the NGO "La Strada-Ukraine" under the leadership of the Government Commissioner for Gender Policy (Kateryna Levchenko) with the aim of introducing gender approaches to the education of foreign students/currents in Ukraine (on the example of the Karazin University). Our university planned and plans to be the ones who will help implement this experience in other higher education institutions.
