World Meteorological Day

On March 23, we celebrate World Meteorological Day. This day aims to inform the global public about the work of national hydrometeorological services and promote a deeper understanding of the importance of their activities.

The Hydrometeorological Service of Ukraine plays a crucial role in providing citizens with accurate weather forecasts, monitoring climate changes, and preventing natural disasters. It contributes to protecting the population, developing agriculture, transportation, and energy sectors, helping to minimize risks associated with extreme weather events. Today, the Hydrometeorological Service of Ukraine also supports the efficiency of defense actions and works to improve logistics for our defenders.

The theme for World Meteorological Day 2025 is "Science for Action." This slogan highlights the practical focus of scientific research in this field, aimed at preserving the environment and adapting to climate change. Modern meteorology relies on advanced technologies, artificial intelligence, satellite systems, and extensive data, ensuring accurate and timely forecasts. By combining science with practical application, it becomes possible to respond promptly to natural disasters, reducing their impact on people’s lives and the national economy.

Let us remember that the university’s founder, Vasyl Karazin, organized Ukraine’s first meteorological station at his estate in the village of Kruchyk (now Bohodukhiv district, Kharkiv region). There, he conducted his own research for several decades, underscoring his dedication to scientific development and its practical application.

Today, researchers from the Department of Physical Geography and Cartography at Karazin University's School of Geology, Geography, Recreation, and Travel Business continue to address meteorological issues. To support their work, faculty members and students are equipped with state-of-the-art geodetic, hydrological, meteorological, and computer equipment.
