Results of the QS World University Rankings 2024: Karazin University is the best Ukrainian university of the decade and the best frontline university
On June 27, 2023, the results of the international academic ranking QS World University Rankings 2024, compiled by the British consulting company Quacquarelli Symonds, were published.
According to the results of the ranking, Karazin University took positions 691-700 on a global scale. In addition, the university retains the top position among Ukrainian universities in terms of the ratio of teachers to students, as well as the number of foreign teachers.
On a national scale, for the first time in many years, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv became the leader, ranking 681-690 and several steps ahead of Karazin University. However, according to the results of most editions of the ranking of the last decade, Karazin University remains the best Ukrainian university.
We managed to maintain our leading position in the most difficult conditions. In addition, Karazin University resumed its work two weeks after the beginning of the full-scale war.
It happened that we are geographically close to the aggressor country, so for a long time the university has been in the frontline zone. The Russians dreamed of destroying the Ukrainian people, but they did not succeed in destroying our education, and therefore did not succeed in destroying our future.
The university's place in the QS is our common victory. We live and develop - wounded but unbreakable. Karazin University continues to work despite any conditions: under fire, from a shelter, without electricity. This is a truly titanic effort. Therefore, this achievement belongs to our entire community: every teacher, student, researcher and employee. We are gaining momentum with new strength!
Along with the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the QS World University Rankings is one of the most influential and relevant university rankings. The level of achievement of universities is assessed based on the results of a combination of statistical analysis of the activities of educational institutions, audited data (including information on the citation index from the Scopus database), as well as data from a global expert survey of representatives of the international academic community and employers.
In total, 11 Ukrainian higher education institutions were included in the QS World University Rankings 2024. Globally, the positions of Ukrainian universities have decreased compared to last year due to changes in the ranking methodology. In particular, higher education institutions were previously evaluated by the following six indicators:
- reputation in the academic environment;
- citation of scientific publications of university representatives;
- the ratio of teachers to students;
- attitude of employers to graduates;
- the relative number of foreign teachers;
- relative number of foreign students.
This year, for the first time in a long time, the percentage weight of these indicators was revised. In particular, the percentage weight of the ratio of teachers to students decreased from 20% to 10%. In addition, three new indicators have been included in the rating methodology:
- employment results;
- international research network;
- sustainable development.
In particular, Karazin University is ranked 9th among Ukrainian higher education institutions by the indicator of sustainable development. However, it is worth noting that since the beginning of 2023, a wide range of activities in this area has been carried out. This includes the adoption of a number of university sustainability policies.
