Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Professor Yurii Matsevytyi Has Passed Away: Karazin University Expresses Its Condolences

On September 24, 2026, at the age of 92, renowned Ukrainian scientist in the field of thermal physics and thermal power engineering, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, and Honorary Citizen of the City of Kharkiv Yurii Mykhailovych Matsevytyi passed away.

Yurii Matsevytyi worked in Ukrainian science for many years, headed the Institute for Problems in Machinery of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, developed a scientific school of thermal physics, and trained several generations of specialists. His research focused on heat transfer, the modeling and study of thermal processes, temperature fields, and the thermal state of power equipment, including gas and steam turbines.

An important part of Yurii Mykhailovych's professional career was also his work at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. In 2001, he founded the Department of Thermal Physics and Molecular Physics, and from 2002, he worked at the university as a professor. In 2003, he became head of the department, which became one of the centers for training specialists in thermal physics, thermal power engineering, and modern energy technologies.

Yurii Matsevytyi's work combined fundamental science with practical challenges in the energy and mechanical engineering sectors. The scientist was the author and co-author of numerous scientific publications and inventions.

For his significant contribution to the development of science, Yurii Mykhailovych was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, prizes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and other state honors. In 2015, he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the City of Kharkiv.

Yurii Mykhailovych Matsevytyi's scientific legacy and contribution to the development of thermal physics, thermal power engineering, and mechanical engineering became an important part of Ukrainian science. The memory of the scientist, educator, and mentor will live on among his colleagues, students, and followers.
