Online Project to Mark Vasyl Karazin’s 248th Birthday Anniversary

On February 10, Karazin University community celebrates the birthday of the University's founder, public figure, enlightener, scientist, inventor, Vasyl Karazin.

He got an education at Kharkiv Private Boarding House and the Mining School in Saint Petersburg while in military service.

Vasyl Karazin began his active public activity by developing a number of ambitious transformation projects in Russia in the early reign of Alexander I. In particular, thanks to his initiative and with financial support of the local nobility and merchants, Kharkiv University was founded, which later became the center of cultural renaissance of Ukraine.

He participated in establishing the Ministry of Education of the Russian Empire (the second on the European continent), he was an innovator and inventor, the first physicist and chemist in Ukraine, author of grand projects to create a meteorological network and generate electricity from the atmosphere, organizer of one of Europe's first scientific societies — Philotechnical.

On the occasion of his birthday, P. T. Tronko Center for Area Studies has prepared an online project with a selection of quotes of famous figures of the XIX - early XXI century, which give an assessment of Vasil Karazin.
