New Interdisciplinary Master's Degree Program: Data Science

Dear applicants!
The Department of Theoretical and Applied Informatics, in cooperation with the Department of Fundamental Mathematics at the School of Mathematics and Informatics, is launching a new interdisciplinary Master's program — Data Science.
This educational program is a synergy of fundamental mathematics and computer science. It offers a combination of theoretical topics in mathematics and practical skills in the field of computer science.
Pursuing a Master's degree in Data Science is a great decision, especially in today’s world, where data analytics plays a crucial role across numerous fields.
Why is mathematics critically important in Data Science?
Mathematics is the foundation of many algorithms and methods used in data analysis, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Mathematics helps us:
-
understand how models work and how changing parameters affects results,
-
assess model quality using metrics, errors, and probabilities,
-
choose the right methods for different data types and tasks,
-
optimize model training processes, such as through gradient descent based on derivatives.
Without solid knowledge of mathematics, it is impossible not only to develop new models but even to fully utilize the existing ones.
Data Science is not just about "pushing buttons"; it is about the ability to think critically, justify your decisions, analyze results, and draw meaningful conclusions.
This program was developed in collaboration with the University of Ulm (Germany), incorporating their years of experience and the practical challenges their graduates face. The curriculum was jointly designed, and some courses will be taught in English. Detailed information can be found in the official program description via the provided link.
Starting from the second year of study, students may participate in a dual degree program, which means you will receive diplomas from both Karazin University and the University of Ulm (Germany).
