International day of women and girls in science: the university congratulates
February 11 is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This memorable date was established by a decision of the United Nations and has been celebrated since 2016.
Representatives of the Karazin University have always done a lot for the development of women's education, which, first of all, created a social basis for the entry of girls and women into science.
For example, the founder of the university, Vasyl Karazin, at the beginning of the 19th century advocated the idea that education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age and gender. And in 1842, he justified the importance of education for girls who belonged to the serf state — the least socially protected stratum of the population. This idea was implemented already after the death of the educator.
Karazin University has become one of the flagships of women's education in our country and, together with other institutions of higher education, has trained entire generations of female scientists and researchers. After all, it was there that for the first time in Ukraine at that time women received the right to get an education. In particular, the historian Oleksandra Yefimenko became the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate. This title was awarded to her by the Academic Council of Kharkiv University in 1910.
We congratulate all women scientists on the holiday, may your thirst for knowledge, enthusiasm contribute to new and new scientific discoveries!
