International Holocaust Remembrance Day

27 january 2025 year

Every year on January 27, the world honors the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. This day serves as a reminder of the tragedy that claimed millions of lives, including many in our region.

During the German occupation of 1941–1943, Kharkiv witnessed crimes against humanity. In the winter of 1942, on the outskirts of the city, in the area of Drobytskyi Yar, Nazi forces carried out mass executions of over 16,000 people, most of whom were Jewish. Among the victims were students and professors of the university who were murdered solely because of their nationality.

Today, decades later, Ukrainians are once again forced to endure similar atrocities. russian forces commit war crimes against the Ukrainian people — mass killings, the destruction of entire cities, and deportations have become a harsh reality. The world must recognize the importance of preventing the repetition of past tragedies.

Remembering these horrific crimes, Karazin University supports initiatives aimed at preserving historical memory and upholding the principles of tolerance and humanity. Today, we not only commemorate the victims but also reflect on our responsibility to the future.

May the light of remembrance and hope always shine in our hearts.

Eternal memory to the victims of the Holocaust.
