International Day for Biological Diversity
Every year on May 22, the world celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity. This day serves as an extremely important reminder that the richness of flora and fauna is the foundation of healthy ecosystems, the basis of our life, and a guarantee of a sustainable future for the entire planet.
For Ukraine today, this date carries a special and painful meaning. As a result of military actions, our nature is suffering enormous losses: forests are being destroyed, water bodies are being polluted, unique protected areas are being damaged, and rare species of animals and plants are dying. The preservation and restoration of Ukraine’s environment has become another important direction of our struggle.
V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, as one of the leading scientific centers of the country, traditionally stands at the forefront of studying and preserving natural heritage:
- Fundamental research: scientists and students of the School of Biology continuously monitor the state of ecosystems, record the impact of the war on the environment, and develop effective strategies for the future restoration of Ukrainian nature.
- Preservation of unique collections: the Botanical Garden and the University Museum of Nature of Karazin University, despite all current challenges, continue to carefully preserve invaluable collections of plants and specimens of fauna.
- Environmental education: we are shaping a new generation of responsible professionals who understand the value of every living organism and are ready to implement innovations to protect the environment.
Biological diversity is a living, complex, and very fragile fabric of our planet. Its preservation depends on each of us. Even the smallest step toward environmental awareness matters.
Let us study, respect, and protect nature! Together we are capable of restoring what has been lost and preserving life in all its astonishing forms.
