Karazin Community Honours the Memory of Petro Tymofiiovych Tronko, the First Chair of the University Supervisory Board

On 13 July 2026, a meeting of the Presidium of the National Union of Local Historians of Ukraine was held in Kyiv. The event was dedicated to the 111th anniversary of the birth of Petro Tymofiiovych Tronko (1915–2011), a prominent figure in Ukrainian local history studies, the first Head of the National Union of Local Historians of Ukraine, Hero of Ukraine, and Academician.

For Karazin University, Petro Tronko is a particularly significant figure, as he was an Honorary Doctor of the University and the first Chair of its Supervisory Board.

The Kharkiv region was represented at the meeting by Olha Vovk, Deputy Director of the Petro Tronko Centre for Ukrainian Studies and Local History, Lecturer at the Department of Historiography, Source Studies and Archaeology of Karazin University, and Head of the Kharkiv Regional Branch of the National Union of Local Historians of Ukraine.

The event began with a commemoration of Petro Tronko and a flower-laying ceremony at his grave. Afterwards, the meeting continued at the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine, to the establishment of which Academician Petro Tronko personally made a significant contribution.

The museum hosted a solemn ceremony for presenting the Petro Tronko Award of the National Union of Local Historians of Ukraine to this year's laureates. Colleagues and followers also shared warm memories of Petro Tymofiiovych and spoke about how his memory is honoured today in different regions of Ukraine.
