Karazin University Celebrates Its 220th Anniversary
This Year Marks the 220th Anniversary of One of Ukraine’s Finest Educational Institutions — V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University
Founded in 1804 at the initiative of prominent Ukrainian intellectual and public figure Vasyl Nazarovych Karazin, the university has grown from a small educational institution into a powerful scientific and educational center of international renown.
Since its establishment, the university has become home to numerous researchers, thinkers, and cultural figures. Esteemed personalities such as physicist Lev Landau, historian Dmytro Bahalii, folklorist Mykola Sumtsov, and many others studied and worked here. Today, the university continues its proud traditions, remaining a hub for innovation and scientific breakthroughs.
Karazin University has been recognized as Ukraine’s best university of the decade in most editions of the QS rankings. It stands as one of the largest scientific centers in Ukraine, encompassing nearly all areas of modern fundamental science. The university consists of 26 faculties and educational-scientific institutes, as well as three research institutes — Chemistry, Biology, and Astronomy.
The university is home to six academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 296 doctors of sciences, 945 candidates of sciences, professors, and associate professors, all of whom teach nearly 18,000 students.
The university has always been and remains a place where not only great scientific ideas are born but also an unbreakable spirit of intellectual freedom. Behind every achievement and every victory stand the people — our Karazinites. This is your celebration, your accomplishments! Congratulations!
