Birthday of the prominent Ukrainian mathematician, honorary doctor of Karazin University Volodymyr Marchenko: the university congratulates

Today is the 101st anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Ukrainian mathematician Volodymyr Marchenko.

Volodymyr Oleksandrovych is a Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Member of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, Honorary Doctor of Karazin University, Honorary Doctor of the Sorbonne, winner of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, Vernadsky Gold Medal of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and many other scientific awards.

Volodymyr Marchenko was one of the founders of the B.I. Verkin Institute of Low Temperatures of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kharkiv) and its Mathematical Department, where he headed the Department of Mathematical Physics for over 40 years, and was a long-time president of the Kharkiv Mathematical Society. The scientist has always paid much attention to the training of the scientific succession, passing on his vast experience and knowledge to young people: among his students are two academicians of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, dozens of doctors and candidates of sciences.

For more than half a century, academician Volodymyr Marchenko taught at Karazin University, and for many years he led the city seminar on mathematical physics at the university, which significantly influenced the development of mathematical research throughout the country.

His scientific works are devoted to the spectral theory of differential operators, boundary value problems of mathematical physics, function theory, methods of integration of nonlinear differential equations, applied and computational mathematics.Volodymyr Marchenko developed methods for solving inverse problems of scattering theory, derived asymptotic formulas for spectral functions, and introduced the concept of a generalized spectral function.
