Crimean Tatar Flag Day

On June 26, Ukraine marks Crimean Tatar Flag Day, a day dedicated to honoring the national symbol of the Indigenous people of Crimea, as well as their history, culture, and enduring struggle for the right to live freely in their homeland.

The Crimean Tatar flag—a sky-blue banner bearing the golden tamga—symbolizes the unity, dignity, and resilience of the Crimean Tatar people. The blue color represents the peaceful sky, freedom, and the continuity of historical traditions. At the same time, the tamga, the ancestral emblem of the Giray dynasty, reflects the centuries-old statehood and heritage of the Crimean Tatar nation.

Today, this flag carries a profound significance. It has become a symbol of resistance to the occupation of Crimea, the struggle for human rights, the preservation of national identity, and hope for the return of Crimea to Ukraine.

Karazin University, located in Kharkiv—a city that knows the true cost of occupation and resistance—feels this solidarity especially deeply. We remember and firmly believe that the fate of the Crimean Tatar people and the fate of Ukraine are inseparable. Every year, this day brings us closer to the moment when the Crimean Tatar flag will once again fly freely over its native peninsula.
