Biodiversity Genomics Europe

Addressing the global biodiversity crisis necessitates a more profound comprehension of Earth's life diversity than our current knowledge allows. Despite centuries of research, approximately 80% of multicellular species worldwide remain undiscovered and undescribed.

Genomics emerges as a pivotal tool for tackling these challenges. There exists a critical imperative to cultivate and fortify effective communities of practice. Furthermore, building capacity and fostering collaboration across diverse activities and borders is essential to harness the full potential of genomic tools in addressing biodiversity issues.

The School of Biology is a participant of the project among 33 partner institutions and 20 participating nations. Its tasks include the study of dark biodiversity, pollinator intraspecific genetic diversity, the occurrence of invasive species in European sea ports using eDNA methodology, citizen science activities etc.
