Department of International Relations

In today’s world, as Ukraine actively integrates into the global arena and plays an increasingly important role in international processes, the demand for highly qualified specialists in international relations is critically important.
The Department of International Relations of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is a recognized center for training professionals capable of representing national interests, promoting peace, and contributing to sustainable development on the global stage.

Since 2016, the department has functioned as the Department of International Relations, International Information, and Security, and since 2024 – as the Department of International Relations.

The department’s mission is to develop intellectual leaders who combine analytical thinking, ethical principles, and a global vision to address modern challenges.

The department trains specialists capable of acting effectively in the international environment, fostering intercultural dialogue, and developing strategies for peace and sustainable development.
It serves as a platform for innovative ideas through education, research, and international cooperation – to influence the global order.


Educational Activities

The Department of International Relations offers degree programs at two levels:

  • Bachelor’s degree in International Relations

  • Master’s degree in International Relations, Public Communications, and Regional Studies

Professors and associate professors of the department are highly qualified experts in political science, law, public administration, sociology, economics, and history. They teach a wide range of courses covering international relations, diplomacy, international economics and law, and country studies.

Research Activities

The department conducts active research focused on key aspects of international relations within the framework of the scientific project “International Relations in the Context of Global Development.”

Main research areas include:

  • Global governance and international security

  • European integration dynamics

  • Digital technologies in international relations

  • Public diplomacy

  • U.S. foreign policy

  • International terrorism and contemporary security challenges

The department organizes annual academic events with scholars from Ukraine and abroad, including the All-Ukrainian Scientific Round Table “Strategic Directions of Foreign Policy and Diplomacy of World Countries” and the All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference “International Relations in Global and Regional Dimensions.”
Research findings are published in conference proceedings, monographs, and departmental textbooks.
Faculty members participate in international internships and conferences, while students engage in research projects and contribute to academic publications.

International Cooperation

The Department is actively integrated into the global academic community through international projects, mobility programs, and internships. Key initiatives include:

  • Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU Studies “Working towards Sustainable Societies in the Eastern Partnership Countries: Challenges and Policy Opportunities beyond 2020” (2022–2025);

  • “JOUKRAINE” Project under the DAAD program “Ukraine Digital: Ensuring Academic Success in Times of Crisis” (2022);

  • Jean Monnet Erasmus+ Project (2019–2022): “State–International–Public: European Values and Norms.”

Students participate in Erasmus+ mobility programs, studying at leading European universities such as:

  • IMC Krems University of Applied Sciences (Austria);

  • University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain);

  • Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences (Germany).

The Department adheres to the principles of academic excellence, intercultural dialogue, and social responsibility. Education and research serve as engines of progress, fostering justice, peace, and sustainable development.
